CODY JARRETT'S SPLENDID TOP TEN PUBLIC DOMAIN GAMES
Following hot on the heals of AmigaPd's top ten game list we have kindly been granted permission to include Cody Jarrett's top ten list. This is taken from Cody's top 20 list submitted on the English Amiga Board forum. For those of you who don't know Cody is the global moderator for the forum.
If you would like to read the complete top twenty then click here,
Thanks again to Cody for allowing us to use the comments and images. Hopefully we will have some more guest top tens in the future as it adds variety to the site and keeps it fresh.
Number 10: Knights
Knights Amiga Public Domain
Knights is a two player game (most of the best PD games are multiplayer) where you each must explore a dungeon, setting traps for the other player and generally battling it out.
It's kind of like a medieval Spy vs Spy, with nice touches, such as the randomly generated dungeons...
Number 9: Cybernetix
Cybernetix Amiga Public Domain
It's Defender! It's Asteroids! It's...Cybernetix!
Cybernetix is a shareware game from the people who made other great games like Roadkill and Overkill. It's a simple sideways-scrolling shoot-'em-up with asteroids which break into smaller pieces, enemy ships and bonuses to collect.
It's another example of how the shareware scene could exceed the quality of commercial releases..
Number 8 Super Obliteration
Super Obliteration Amiga Public Domain
Shareware and PD is good for taking interesting ideas from other games and mixing into one game.
Here it's Asteroids (or possibly Pang) and Turrican which has been 'remixed'. You've got to control the Turrican character to shoot the flying rocks in classic Asteroids style.
It all adds up to a top shoot-'em-up, with a number of screens and options..

Number 7: Tankkk
Tankkk Amiga Public Domain
Okay, so it looks a bit rubbish. It's a tank game, but the bullets bounce off the walls and around the mazes. It's kind of retro.
If you have five people playing it at once, then it's lots of fun and you can change all the options in the game.
No idea why it's called Tankkk, though!
Number 6: Ork Attack
Ork Attack Amiga Public Domain
Now you can pretend to be taking part in the Helm's Deep battle from The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers!
Lots of orks climb up the walls of the castle - you stand at the top and drop stops or slice them with your sword. As you can't have both rocks and sword at the same time, it can sometimes be difficult to decide on what to use. One mistake and you're dead!
There's lots of blood and gore too...
Number 5: Knock Out
Knockout Amiga Public Domain
Hey, it's an AMOS game!
Lots of cars start on a circle and try to shove each other off - but the circle gets continually smaller and harder to stay on. Then the last remaining car must drive off the circle onto a bridge (a last chance for the car to fall off and lose its point).
As is usual with some of the best PD games, this is a simple and good idea done very well. There are also lots of good multiplayer options.
Number 4: Gravity Power
Gravity Power Amiga Public Domain
Originally called Gravity Force 2, this is an enhanced version especially made for Amiga Power who championed it, probably because of its multiplayer qualities.
It's split-screen Thrust time, but with numerous configurations and maps. A map editor is also available to make your own.
Great stuff!!!

Number 3: Master Blaster
Master Blaster Amiga Public Domain
Not much to say here. It's Bomberman and this is a good version of it!
Number 2 - Super Foul Egg
Super Foul Egg Amiga Public Domain
The name Super Foul Egg comes from an Amiga Power in-joke (they asked for it to be renamed after it was sent in for the coverdisk).
The actual game is a port of Super Puyo Puyo, a game which didn't really see the commercial light of day on the Amiga. So, it was released in the shareware/PD scene (actually, I think it was supposed to be an Amiga Power coverdisk only thing, rather than freeware).
The addictive part comes from trying to match the colours together, so that they disappear, but also drop rocks on the other player's side. This makes it a top two player game.
Number 1 - Scorced Tanks
Scorched Tanks Amiga Public Domain
I couldn't think of a better shareware game for the top spot in the 10, as I've played Scorched Tanks so much with friends.
Worms was very much like it, but Scorched Tanks is a bit more strategic and with less extravagant weapons. Also, there is only one tank, instead of four worms, which makes bad placement less of a problem.
Okay, so it's an AMOS game!
