INTERVIEW WITH GURMITA SINGHReturning back to our public domain / shareware routes, we have been fortunate enough to interview Gurmita Singh about his Amiga update of the classic C64 game, Henry's House.
Was Henry's House your first computer game?Yes Henry’s house was my first venture in to creating computer games.
What was the appeal in updating this C64 classic to the Amiga? I always loved playing the C64 version when I was as kid. Really enjoyed the game play so when it came to deciding what to make for my first game I thought I would do homage to it.
How long did the game take to make? The game took around 6 months to make; I mostly worked on it in my spare time after school, but around half way through development my brother also got involved and took on the job of creating all the graphics and animation.
What aspect of the game proved most difficult?I’m actually an artist myself really, not a programmer so learning to program for the first time was definitely a steep learning curve. I remember a lot of late nights trying to figure out some problem or another.
Is the game identical to the C64 one in screen layout or is it more of a tribute with different levels and platform layouts? The game was more a tribute, all the level design graphics were unique to the Amiga game. I wanted to update the game and add my own style rather than just re-create it.
Why did you choose AMOS as the programming language for the game? The reason I choose AMOS was that it was fairly quick to learn and use. It had a really nice selection of built in apps such as the sprite creator and the animation language ‘AMAL’. It had an excellent user manual as well very concise.

How did the agreement with F1 Licenceware work - were you paid a flat fee or a % of sales?
We were paid a percentage of the sales
Are you happy for this game to be available as Public Domain now?
Yeah it’s great to see it still available in some form; I recently saw a video of it on YouTube which was a really nice surprise.
Were there any other Amiga Games you were involved with?
No as I was still at school then so only did it in my spare time as a hobby.
Were there any unfinished Amiga projects you were involved with?
I was actually working on the sequel to ‘Henry’s house’ and was just finishing off coding the tools needed to create the full game when the Amiga scene went under. The game was going to be side scrolling version if I remember, bigger and better. I had the first level nearly done, Never got past that stage.
What are you memories of the Amiga Pd scene?
I don’t really have too many memories of the PD scene in general as I was not that involved with it directly. It was much more of a hobby for me creating the games/tools at home.
Are you still invovled in the computer industry today - if so are there any projects or news you want to share with out readers?
I am still involved in the games industry these days. I’ve been working as a professional artist for over 10 years now with work on numerous AAA titles. I’ve just released my first iPhone title called ‘iRBot’ which as it happens is a 3D side scrolling platform game. Check out the trailer below from YouTube or my website
Thank you.
AmigaPd would like to thank Gurmita Singh for taking the time to answer the questions.
