Disaster Strikes

Disaster - Have lost all sprites and background blocks - the disk returns an error message and no longer loads -

Now need to think about whether to start again with SEUCK which will delay this project by a month or move onto Backbone game creator.

Will make a decision over the next couple of weeks : (

Have created the main spitefire sprite - using the non direction animation option as it allows for more realistic propellor animation.  Drawback is I don't have banking movement when moving left or right.

Completed death animation - quite a long piece of animation with smoke blowing out of the plane before it disappears into a smoke cloud - had wanted to include the plane discending to the ground in a tail spin - see if I can include this in enemy sprites.

Biggest limitation encountered so far is the sprite colours - it should be 8 but in reality it is 7 as the first colour is used for transparency. Makes it very difficult to choose colours - looks like the enemy planes will have to be green as well instead of the grey as originally planed.

Started to produce background sprites - trying to create a sense of depth and flying over the kent country side - looked at photo graphs of spitefires flying over farm fields - got a way to go before I am happy - but have a nice background sprite for a sheep field.

Below is first screen shot of work in progress - no enemy planes yet

Choosing a Game

Back in the early 1990s when I was a teenager I did submit four SEUCK games to pd libraries and some were included on the Assassins game disks.

The games I made were Luftwaffe (fast paced WW2 game), Blob (bounce a ball along a tiled courseway), Warrior (limited Guantlet clone) and Billy the Dragon (awful game - only released to receive disks in exchange).

The game I have decided to make - is an update of Luftwaffe - this game unfortunately seems to be missing - I seem to recall stealing graphics from other existing SEUCK games (I was only a teenager and didn't know better) The game did however move at pace compared to the other SEUCK games such as Air Ace 2 and Raid which were set on the lower scroll speeds.

To make the game an update rather than an attempted remaking - I will switch it around with the player controlling a British spitefire and set it over England during the Battle of Britain. Perhaps that will be the title - or working title - "Battle of Britain"

Why SEUCK

Whilst the Amiga version of SEUCK was not as accomplished as the C64 version it was still possible to produce some enjoyable games.  For all the hundreds of awful games there were some very professional looking games made.

Air Ace 2, Bop N Blop, Furmyre, Intense, PeeBee, Webs, Raid, Sky Flyer, Raid , Tex, Serene 2 and Xenon 3 all had good presentation and some also had good basic game play with Air Ace 2 appearing on an Amiga Power cover disk. To see this games visit the top 10 SEUCK page.

The challenge I face is to try to produce a game equal to these in standard.

New Section - Game Creation Blogs

Welcome to a new section for AmigaPd - I have decided to review the various game creating software packages which were used by contributors to the Amiga Public domain scene during the 1980s and 1990s and hopefully create some new games during the process.  The three packages I will be using are SEUCK, Backbone and AMOS and I will be using them in that order as it reflects the level of difficulty associated with each software.  Fingers crossed at the end of the process there will be three new public domain games released and hopefully the blogs explaining the games creation will inspire others to make and release new games too.
